Walk To End Alzheimer's

When Media Makes a Difference

During the course of my career, I have had the pleasure of working with a slew of different types of clients. I’ve worked with jewelry stores, furniture stores, mattress stores, bicycle stores, event marketing, retail sales, QSR’s, state agencies – you name it, I’ve probably done it! But now, for the last two years, I’ve been on the agency side of the business, which has afforded me the opportunity to work with some really extraordinary clients.  Some of my favorites are ones where we are helping to create change.

A new client that we worked with last year was the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California.  They selected Media Solutions as their partner advertising agency for their 2015 walk year.  This meant we were in charge of overseeing all placement and buying of radio, television, outdoor, transit and digital advertising.

We were tasked with helping to drive registrants, walkers, donations and to help get the word out to have people start teams and join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Some facts that I hadn’t know about prior to working with their teams is some of these quick facts:

  • It’s the only cause of death in the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed.
  • Almost two thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women
  • 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States
  • Only 45% of people with Alzheimer’s diseases or their caregivers report being told of their diagnosis where as 90% of people with the four most common types of cancer have been told of their diagnosis
  • Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease

Those facts really hit home, so when we went out to request partnerships with our media vendors, we started to learn more about the partnerships we have – because Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects so many without a cure, we came to learn that many of our friends know someone who is battling their disease.  Which in turn helped to really push the importance of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Through the course of the advertising campaign, we came up with creative options, radio stations formed their own teams and created spots to drive listeners to sign up for the walk, TV stations have PSAs produced specifically detailing how you can help end Alzheimer’s with your support.  We were able to advertise in a total of 11 markets to help drive the message of Walk.  Overall, the campaign served a total of 65 million ad impressions, a total of 118% over delivery over the booked impressions, and an additional 20 million impressions were bonus to the client on top of the paid posting. The Alzheimer’s Association saw an increase in donations year over year and an increase in walkers.

Eager to do our part here at Media Solutions, our team attended and walked in the Sacramento Walk to End Alzheimer’s walk as well.
